A permanent community mosaic art work has been in installed at the corner of Sandfly Road and Channel Highway, Margate, a small community just south of Hobart, Tasmania at the gateway to the Channel region. Designed and fabricated by 5 artists (Maz Gill-Harper, Rosemary Smalley, Clare Smith, Cheryl Wilson and Merinda Young) with support of community volunteers, the mosaic has transformed the average concrete structure into a valued community asset.
The design features images representing the history, culture and environment of the Margate area stretching from North West Bay to the hills of the hinterland. The mosaic consists of around 70000 glass tiles and covers 28 square metres. All labour was voluntary.
Planning started in September 2004. The tiles were laid and prepared at Tudor Rose Glass Works studio in Kingston between January and April 2005. It took a further 2 weeks on site to apply the tiles and grout the project. The project was supported by the Kingborough Council, Tudor Rose Glass Works and numerous community volunteers.
